The brands, one by one
Maruni
Maruni, founded in 1928 as a bentwood factory and based in Hiroshima, turned craft skill into industrial precision early, and its collection carries the work of Naoto Fukasawa, Jasper Morrison and Cecilie Manz. Its Japanese webshop is explicit: it does not deliver overseas, and its prices and warranty apply to delivery within Japan only. Buyers abroad are sent to the dealer list on maruni.com, which covers 15 European countries and US stores such as Luminaire, Haute Living and Scott + Cooner. Maruni itself notes that overseas prices differ from Japanese ones because of shipping, import duties and local standards.
Karimoku Case
Karimoku Case begins each collection with an architecture project, a "case", with Norm Architects and Keiji Ashizawa among its creators and Karimoku's facility in Aichi making the pieces; Karimoku traces its origins to 1940. The Karimoku Case site has no shop, and Karimoku's Japanese online shop, which sells the collection, delivers within Japan only. Overseas buyers use the dealer list on karimoku-case.com: A+R in Los Angeles, Gestalt in Hudson, New York, Prevalent Projects and Haute Living in the US, and stores in more than 15 European countries. Karimoku New Standard, the group's other international line, publishes its own dealer list on the same model.
Time & Style
Time & Style runs its own factory in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, which handles every step from buying logs to milling, drying, assembly and finishing; the brand describes itself as the only company in Japan that buys, saws and dries Hokkaido-grown timber in-house. Since 9 February 2025 its online store has not accepted orders from outside Japan, and the brand has announced that the online store closes on 31 October 2026. In Europe you buy at its own stores in Milan and Amsterdam or through distributors; in the US through distributors including The Future Perfect in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York.
Ariake
Ariake is the joint brand of two workshops in Morodomi, Saga, Legnatec and Hirata Chair, working with designers including Gabriel Tan, Norm Architects, Keiji Ashizawa and Staffan Holm, in materials from oak and hinoki to paper cord and sumi and indigo finishes. There is no webshop; its retailers page lists Gestalt, A Plus R and Pitch Studio in the US, and one European distributor, Est18. Its 2026 price list shows prices "on request", ex-factory and excluding taxes, so the figure you pay comes from the retailer.
Ritzwell
Ritzwell, founded in Fukuoka in 1992, keeps the whole process from design to manufacturing in Japan, with showrooms in Tokyo and Osaka. It also has its own overseas branch, Ritzwell Italia in Milan, and its dealer map lists stores in more than 20 European countries and three in the US: ddc in New York, Usona in Philadelphia and CAM Studio in Houston. In Japan it quotes about 2.5 to 3 months for made-to-order pieces; overseas, the dealer confirms price and timing.
Conde House
Conde House has made furniture in Asahikawa since 1968, with Hokkaido-grown oak and ash making up roughly three quarters of its wood. Among the brands here it is the only one with its own offices in both the US and Europe: CondeHouse U.S.A., with a showroom in Costa Mesa, California, and CondeHouse Europe GmbH in Koblenz, with a showroom in Bonn. Its US site states that everything is made to order in Hokkaido, ships within the United States with lead times of roughly 10 to 12 weeks, and is priced on enquiry; it also lists online dealers.
Ishinomaki Laboratory
Ishinomaki Laboratory began in 2011 as a shared workshop where local residents could access tools and materials for repairs after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, and grew into a maker of simple, durable pieces such as the Ishinomaki Stool by Keiji Ashizawa. Its online store displays prices in local currencies, but the product page we checked states it is for purchase in Japan only, while its shopping guide says international shipping is arranged by separate contact. The clearer route abroad is its Made in Local programme, in which partners such as SCP in London, HLZFR in Berlin, SCHATZL in Munich and Brightmoor Makerspace in Detroit produce local versions of its designs.
Hida Sangyo
Hida Sangyo has made bentwood furniture in Takayama since 1920, drawing on a woodworking tradition in the Hida region that it dates to the Asuka period. Its Japanese webshop delivers within Japan only and quotes 45 to 60 days for made-to-order furniture. Abroad, its partner-shops page lists US retailers including OOKKUU, Prevalent Projects, Rarify, Haute Living and A Plus R, and a sales representative in the UK; it lists no dealer in the EU.
ENWA by Mililab
ENWA is the furniture collection of Mililab, a Tokyo architecture and design studio founded in 2020: eight pieces designed and developed in Tokyo and made to order in solid North American oak, namely the Ishi stool, Yume chair, Kawa bench, Sora sofa, Tsuki coffee table, Shizu low table, Maru dining table and Sen dining table. It is sold direct on mililab.co with online checkout, and delivered to 34 countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands, with shipping and taxes included in the listed price. Prices start at US$1,100 for the Ishi stool; the Yume chair is from US$2,400, the Sen dining table from US$9,800 and the Sora sofa from US$12,600. Standard production takes approximately 8–12 weeks, with shipping time additional by region, and every piece carries a 20-year limited warranty. What buying from abroad really costs, and how long it takes
1. Landed cost: included in the price, or paid on arrival
The price on a Japanese website is rarely the price at your door. Add up product, international freight, customs clearance, import duty, VAT or sales tax, and final-mile delivery. Some sellers include all of it; others leave duty and tax to be paid at the border. Time & Style's online-store FAQ, for example, states that its price does not include duty and import VAT, which the buyer pays before delivery; that store has taken no orders from outside Japan since February 2025. When you buy through a local dealer, the dealer's quote is the figure to compare, so ask exactly what it covers. 2. Made to order is the norm, so plan for it
Most of these brands build to order rather than ship from stock. Where they publish a figure, production runs from about one to three months: about 4 weeks at Ishinomaki Laboratory, 6 to 12 weeks at Time & Style, roughly 10 to 12 weeks for Conde House in the US, about 2.5 to 3 months at Ritzwell in Japan, and approximately 8 to 12 weeks for ENWA. International shipping comes on top, and it varies by region. Several brands publish no overseas lead time at all; ask the dealer before you pay.
3. Solid wood or veneer
When you cannot see a piece before buying, the core material is the guarantee. Solid oak can be sanded and refinished many times, and dents become part of the surface rather than exposing a different material underneath. Veneer is a thin layer of real wood over a core; it can be the right choice for a large surface, and good makers use it deliberately, Conde House among them, which states that it works in both solid and veneer construction. 4. What to ask before you pay
- Does the price include international shipping, import duty and local tax, or are any of these paid on arrival?
- What is the production lead time, and how long is shipping to my city?
- Is the piece solid wood throughout, or veneer over a core?
- Who handles a claim if something arrives damaged: the maker, the dealer, or the carrier?
- Does the warranty apply in my country, or only where the piece was sold? Maruni, for example, states that its Japanese webshop prices and warranty apply to delivery within Japan.
- Can the order be changed or cancelled once production starts?
