// THE THESIS
No head of table. Just conversation.
01
No head of table.
A rectangular table has a hierarchy — a head, a foot, a better seat. A circle removes it. At Ø1300 mm the Maru seats four to six as equals, every chair the same distance from the centre, every conversation the same length across.
Round isn't a shape. It's a way of sitting together.
The top is a superellipse — between a circle and a square — drawn digitally so the curvature is exact before a single board is cut.
The legs carry a slight bow, leaning inward with quiet confidence — visually delicate, yet perfectly stable. The structural geometry is resolved through thousands of simulations before fabrication, so the table can look light and stand firm under a full setting.
Showing itself modestly — and holding its ground.
THE FORM, IN THE OPEN
03
Not cut from one log — on purpose.
A round top a metre and a third across would split and cup if cut from one piece. So we refused to. The Maru is panel-built from combined solid North American oak boards — grain laid against grain — so the top holds its line for generations.
The same signature curve used across the ENWA collection runs the edge, transitioning smoothly from top to leg so the table reads as one continuous form. The difficulty is invisible. That's the point.
We chose permanence over the easy story.
·
The proof, in numbers.
Two honest comparisons: how many sit as equals around a round top, and how long solid oak lasts against veneer.

One table, every gathering.
At Ø1300 mm and 720 mm high, the Maru anchors the room — dinner for six, a working surface by day, the quiet centre of a home.
The Maru is finished in charcoal — our most difficult finish to develop. Deep enough to read as charcoal across the room, thin enough to keep every grain ridge tactile under the hand. Built from multiple ultra-thin pigmented layers, each hand-sanded before the next.
In raking light, the oak reveals itself through the black.
Water-based, applied in multiple passes. It protects without concealing — you feel the grain, not a coating.
06
Pairs with Yume.
At 720 mm the Maru meets the Yume Chair's 455 mm seat the way it should — room for the knees, the elbows, the long dinner. The same edge geometry runs both pieces, so the set reads as one family across the room.
Built to gather around — for years.
07
One form, every room.
A plaster dining room with low afternoon light. A sculptural centre in an open landscape. A working surface that clears to nothing by evening. The Maru anchors the room without crowding it — round, calm, equal on every side.
A form that asks nothing of the room — and gathers all of it.

The patience the eye can't see.
Before a single cut, the oak is kiln-dried twice over nineteen days — because moisture is the enemy of a clean joint. Every joint is tested with a flashlight: if light passes through, it isn't done. The superellipse top is machined to a computed profile, then every edge hand-shaped to match.
The work you can't see is the reason for the work you can.

The Maru uses a superellipsoid form — mathematically between a circle and a square. It feels round and inviting while using space more efficiently than a true circle. The form is drawn digitally, so we fine-tune the exact curvature before any wood is cut.
The Maru Round Dining Table is designed by Mililab, an architecture and design studio based in Tokyo, Japan, as part of its ENWA collection of eight solid-oak pieces. Mililab applies the same edge geometry it uses in architecture to furniture, and ships direct, DDP, to 34 countries.
