// THE THESIS
1650 mm of calm along the room.
01
1650 mm of calm.
A long low table sits across the room — seen from every angle, reached from the sofa, the floor, the chair. So we drew the Shizu as a single quiet horizontal, 1650 mm of solid oak, low and steady, with surfaces that flow without interruption.
Not the loudest piece in the room — the calmest.
Long enough to hold the day's things, low enough to keep the sightline open. It anchors the seating without crowding it.
STUDY · THE CONTINUOUS EDGESTUDY · THE LOW PROFILE
Over 1650 mm the edge is where the table is touched most — a hand set down, a forearm resting, a cup placed near the corner. The Shizu's continuous curve runs the full length, computed razor-thin from across the room yet soft under the hand.
The beauty isn't on the wood. It's in it.
THE FORM, IN THE ROOM
03
Not cut from one log — on purpose.
A top this long would split and cup if cut from one piece. So we refused to. The Shizu is panel-built from combined solid North American oak boards — grain laid against grain — so the long low surface holds its line for generations.
The same signature curve used across the ENWA collection runs the whole edge, transitioning smoothly from top to base so the table reads as one continuous form. The difficulty is invisible. That's the point.
We chose permanence over the easy story.

The proof, in numbers.
Two honest comparisons: how long the low form runs, and how long solid oak lasts against veneer.

One table, many rooms.
At 1650 mm long and 350 mm high, the Shizu settles into the living room — coffee table, media console, the long calm centre of the seating.
The Shizu is finished in charcoal — our most difficult finish to develop. Deep enough to read as charcoal across the room, thin enough to keep every grain ridge tactile under the hand. Built from multiple ultra-thin pigmented layers, each hand-sanded before the next.
In raking light, the oak reveals itself through the black.
Water-based, applied in multiple passes. It protects without concealing — you feel the grain, not a coating.
06
Pairs with Sora.
At 350 mm the Shizu meets the Sora Sofa and most lounge seating right at hand height — long enough to serve the whole seating group, low enough to keep the sightline open across the room.
Made to be lived around — not just looked at.
07
One form, every room.
A living room around a low afternoon light. A media wall it grounds without bulk. The long calm centre of a seating group. The Shizu anchors the room without crowding it — low, long, and quiet from every sofa.
A form that asks nothing of the room — and grounds all of it.

The patience the eye can't see.
Before a single cut, the oak is kiln-dried twice over nineteen days — because moisture is the enemy of a clean joint. Every joint is tested with a flashlight: if light passes through, it isn't done. The long surface is machined to a computed profile, then every edge hand-shaped to match.
The work you can't see is the reason for the work you can.

Yes — at 1650mm wide and 350mm high the Shizu works beautifully as a TV console or media unit. Its continuous flowing surfaces create a clean, minimal base for screens and media equipment, and the digitally refined edges keep the visual profile light.
The Shizu Low Table is designed by Mililab, an architecture and design studio based in Tokyo, Japan, as part of its ENWA collection of eight solid-oak pieces. Mililab applies the same edge geometry it uses in architecture to furniture, and ships direct, DDP, to 34 countries.
